IBG Develops UnixTM Version of BioAPI Reference Implementation on Behalf Of The BioAPI Consortium

NEW ORLEANS, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- International Biometric Group (IBG) and the BioAPI Consortium today announced at the CardTech/SecurTech conference that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed to develop a Unix(TM) version of the BioAPI(TM) Reference Implementation framework software. This effort will entail ``porting'' the existing Win32 implementation to execute on the Sun Solaris(TM) platform, broadening the applications and environments for standards-based biometric systems. The goal of the two organizations is to have initial versions of the software available in the 2nd quarter of 2002.

``The BioAPI Steering Committee is very pleased to be working with IBG on this porting effort,'' said Cathy Tilton of SAFLINK Corporation, who chairs the BioAPI Consortium. ``One of the main strengths of the BioAPI Specification is that it is an open, platform-independent standard. The availability of the BioAPI for the Solaris platform will greatly affect the availability of biometric solutions for heterogeneous and non-Windows-based systems. Combining this effort with the unique talent and expertise that International Biometric Group possesses will ensure a successful implementation,'' concluded Tilton.

Biometric technologies automatically identify or verify the identity of a person through measurable physical or behavioral characteristics, such as fingerprint, voice, or iris recognition. The BioAPI Specification defines an open system standard application program interface (API) that allows software applications to communicate with a broad range of biometric technologies in a common way. The BioAPI specification is the result of several years of collaborative effort between the biometrics industry, government, and major information technology vendors. The 90+ members comprising the BioAPI Consortium cover a broad cross-section of biometric technology manufacturers, integrators, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and end users from around the world. Version 1.1 of the BioAPI Specification, along with the associated Reference Implementation software, was released in March of 2001 and was recently approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an official ANSI standard.

Currently, the BioAPI specification and the Reference Implementation software are freely available for download from the BioAPI Consortium's website ( http://www.bioapi.org ). The Reference Implementation is the software instantiation of the BioAPI framework and is also available royalty-free as open source software.

``IBG is excited to be involved in a technical capacity with the BioAPI consortium on this critical development effort,'' said McKen Mak, IBG's Senior Security Architect. ``The newly redefined focus on biometric solutions, especially in federal government initiatives, underscores the importance of biometric standards,'' continued Mak.
