PC/Network Access is the use of biometrics to identify or verify the identity of individuals accessing PCs,
PDAs, networks, applications, and other PC-oriented resources. The biometric is used to complement or replace authentication mechanisms such as passwords and tokens.
Of the seven horizontal classifications, PC/Network Access is closest to traditional logical access. Logging onto PCs, laptops, and eventually handheld devices is an obvious application for biometrics, a convenient and secure replacement for passwords. Accessing sensitive files, applications, networks, and databases, as well as other post-login resources, are another common application of biometrics in this arena.
