Retail/ATM/Point of Sale is the use of biometrics to identify or verify the identity of individuals conducting in-person transactions for goods or services. The biometric is used to complement or replace authentication mechanisms such as presenting cards and photo identification,
PINs, or signatures.
The existing paradigms for authentication in Retail/ATM/POS environments are imperfect but widely understood and accepted. The problem encountered in remote transactions, where trust may be lacking on both sides of the transaction and proof of identity is harder to establish, is not as prevalent in Retail/ATM/POS transactions. Biometrics will largely be deployed in these environments as a convenient supplement to existing authentication processes - signatures,
PINs, and presentation of ID.
