Surveillance is the use of biometrics to identify or verify the identity of individuals present in a given space or area. The biometric is used to complement or replace authentication methods such as manual monitoring of cameras.
Biometric surveillance systems are deployed in the majority of the major casinos in North America and in a handful of police applications to search passersby or event attendees against "hit lists" of known criminals. Of these two applications, casino usage is much more widespread and less controversial - the use of automated matching through surveillance cameras has caused an uproar in the U.S. Through
2008, applications of the technology will expand to corporations protecting their grounds against criminals and dismissed employees.
